Frequently Asked Questions
How is pro rata paternity pay calculated?
Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) in the UK is paid at the flat rate (£172.48/week in 2023/24) or 90% of average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. Paternity leave is 1 or 2 consecutive weeks. Pro rata applies for part-time workers based on their AWE.
Who qualifies for statutory paternity pay?
You must be employed continuously for 26 weeks by the 15th week before the due date, earn at least the lower earnings limit (£123/week), and be the biological father, mother's partner, or the child's adopter.
Can I take paternity leave in separate weeks?
In the UK, paternity leave must be taken as 1 or 2 consecutive weeks within 56 days of the birth. You cannot split it into individual days. The calculator shows your eligible window based on the birth or due date.
Does paternity leave affect holiday entitlement?
No. You continue to accrue holiday during paternity leave. Your full annual entitlement remains unchanged. Any accrued holiday can be taken before or after your paternity leave period.
How does shared parental leave differ from paternity leave?
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) allows parents to share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay. It is more flexible than paternity leave, allowing discontinuous blocks. SPL pay is at the same rate as SMP/SPP.
