Frequently Asked Questions
How are shipping costs calculated?
Carriers use the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight. Dimensional weight = (L × W × H) ÷ DIM factor. DIM factors: UPS/FedEx domestic = 139, international = 139. USPS = 166. The calculator compares actual vs dimensional weight.
What is dimensional weight and how does it affect shipping cost?
Dimensional weight prices bulky, lightweight packages by volume. A 12×12×12 inch box: (1,728 ÷ 139) = 12.4 lbs DIM weight. If actual weight is 5 lbs, you pay for 12.4 lbs. The calculator shows which weight the carrier will charge.
How do I reduce shipping costs for my ecommerce store?
Use right-sized boxes (reduce DIM weight). Negotiate volume discounts with carriers. Compare rates across UPS, FedEx, USPS. Use flat-rate boxes for heavy items. Ship from locations closer to customers. The calculator compares carrier rates.
What are typical shipping zones and how do they affect price?
Carriers divide the country into zones 1-8 based on distance from origin. Zone 1 is local, Zone 8 is coast-to-coast. Each zone increase adds cost. A 5 lb package might cost $8 for Zone 2 but $15 for Zone 8.
How do I calculate international shipping costs?
International shipping considers: weight/dimensions, destination country, customs duties, insurance, and service level. Duties are typically 0-25% of declared value. The calculator estimates total landed cost including duties and taxes.
