Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I boil an egg?
Soft-boiled: 6-7 minutes (runny yolk). Medium: 8-9 minutes (jammy yolk). Hard-boiled: 10-12 minutes (fully set yolk). Times start from when water reaches a rolling boil. The timer includes presets for each doneness level.
Does egg size affect boiling time?
Yes. Medium eggs need about 1 minute less than large eggs. Extra-large eggs need 1 minute more. The times above are for large eggs. The calculator adjusts timing based on your selected egg size.
Should I start timing from cold or boiling water?
The timer assumes the boiling water method: bring water to a rolling boil, gently lower eggs in, then start timing. The cold water method (start eggs in cold water, bring to boil) requires different timing and is less precise.
How do I prevent eggs from cracking while boiling?
Use room-temperature eggs (or warm cold eggs under running water). Lower eggs gently with a spoon. Add a splash of vinegar to the water — it helps seal any small cracks. Do not overcrowd the pot.
Does altitude affect egg boiling time?
Yes. Water boils at lower temperatures at higher altitudes (about 1°C less per 300m). At 1,500m elevation, add 1-2 minutes to boiling times. At 3,000m, add 3-4 minutes. The calculator can adjust for altitude.
